What is SEO and Why do we need it?
Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is the process of building the content and structure of your website so that Search Engines (in particular Google) can understand what your site is about, and present your website pages to users looking for your content. A carefully researched and constructed page of content can rank highly in the Search Engine Results Pages or SERPS.
The position within any search page result can have a MAJOR IMPACT on the success (or otherwise) of getting traffic to your website.
Results near the top of the SERPS will get more visits (AKA clicks), so competition for the top spots can be very strong.
Simply put, around 70% of ALL SEARCH TRAFFIC goes to the Top THREE Positions on the SEARCH ENGINE RESULTS PAGE.
The table here shows an estimate of the Click Through Rate (CTR) at different positions, ranging from around 30% at the Number 1 SERPS position, decreasing to around 3% at the Number 10 SERPS Position.
Bear in mind that this is just for Page 1 of SERPS. Potential traffic is almost zero for pages 2, 3 and so on.
SEO can be a rather slow process, with results typically taking at least three months to be seen, so patience and a systematic approach is a must.
